Anyone else notice that the falalalala of December disappears shortly after the calendar turns to January? So how do we beat those winter blues? Here's a few tips to keep you smiling.
1. Go outside! I know its way easier to curl up on the couch with a warm cup of coffee but when the sun comes out head outside. We did just that this weekend and ventured out to Lake Louise. It's impossible to feel blue with those magnificent mountains all around.
2. Take your Vitamin D! Being deficient in Vitamin D has been shown to increase the risk of seasonal depression. Supplementing with at least 400 IUs of D3 daily can help support a healthy mood. I actually take 4000 IU's a day!
3. Exercise! Endorphins are your friend and they are released when we exercise. They help memory and brain function and make you feel happy and satisfied. A brisk walk, a 20 minute yoga practice, a HIIT workout. Find an activity you love and you will be well on your way to fighting off those winter blues.
4. Immune Support! We are more likely to get sick in these winter months as well. Zinc, elderberry, and echinacea are just a few of the supplements that are known to bolster your immune system. I take an Immune Health supplement during the winter months.
5. Omega 3 fatty Acids! This supplement has also been shown to relieve occasional seasonal depression. Omega 3 fatty acids help form cell membranes and keep them soft and flexible, which allows for better passage of seratonin.
