Last night, I decided to try something different on my quest for a good night's sleep. After reading a comment in a Perimenopause group I thought I would give it a try. What was it? I slipped on a pair of socks before tucking myself into bed and the result was miraculous. It was the best sleep I've had in weeks! What the heck? I needed answers and since it's 2024 I went to Google!
So it turns out there is science behind this simple sleep hack! I stumbled upon research highlighting the role of distal vasodilation – an increase of blood to your hands and feet that reduces your core body temperature quicker. A study from the Sleep Disorders Center at the University of Basel, Switzerland suggested that wearing socks could enhance distal vasodilation, promoting better blood circulation and potentially alleviating the very symptoms that had been disrupting my sleep.
A hot flash is a rise in the bodies core temperature so with the socks helping to decrease the core body temperature because of distal vasodilation it appears the sock drawer may just be the solution to those restless nights women suffer from in peri and menopause.
Last night's experience was fantastic so I'm going to keep doing it. It's incredible how a small change in bedtime routine can make such a significant difference in overall well-being.
Have you tried this? Are you going to try it? I would love to hear if it works for you.
