Turning 50: 7 Lessons that have Simplified my Wellness Journey

This past week, I turned 50. A milestone birthday that, years ago, might have seemed intimidating. But today, I feel stronger, more at peace, and more aligned with who I truly am than ever before. So, I wanted to share seven life lessons that have shaped me along the way. Maybe they’ll resonate with you too.

1. I Don’t Just Exercise— I Feel My Body Move

I used to think of exercise as something to check off the list, a way to shape my body to fit society’s standards. Not anymore. Now, I move to feel good. I let my breath guide me, I listen to my body, and I embrace movement that nourishes me. Whether it’s Pilates, MELT, or a simple walk outside, my goal is to connect with my body, not fight against it.

2. Hustle Culture Is Overrated

For so long, I measured my success in productivity—how much I got done, how busy I was. But I’ve realized that success isn’t about doing more; it’s about feeling at peace. Now, I focus on what truly matters—nurturing myself, my family, and the things that bring me joy.

3. Awareness Is the Key to an Intentional Life

If I could give one piece of advice for personal growth, it would be this: develop awareness. Pay attention to how you feel, what energizes you, what drains you. Once you become aware, you can make choices that align with your values and create a life that feels intentional rather than reactive.

4. People Will Judge You Anyway—Let It Go

No matter what we do, someone will have an opinion. Trying to please everyone is exhausting and impossible. I’ve learned to let go of caring about the judgment of others. The only opinion that truly matters is my own.

5. Self-Love Is Non-Negotiable

We cannot pour from an empty cup. Loving ourselves isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. When we prioritize self-care, we show up better for others. I’ve learned that the more I nurture myself, the more love I have to give.

6. Growth Is Our Purpose

When I was younger, I thought life was about hitting milestones, having the perfect life, and figuring everything out. I believed that if I did everything "right," life would be easy. But life isn’t easy, and it’s not supposed to be. The struggles teach us the lessons we need to learn. Lean into them, look for the wisdom you need to gather, and know that the lows will pass—just as the highs will. Growth is why we are here.

7. People Are Inherently Good

I’ve always believed in the good in people, but somewhere in the past five years, I started thinking the opposite—that the world was full of bad people. But I’ve come to realize that’s not true either. We are all flawed—flawsome. We are all doing the best we can with the skillset we have on any given day. So we need to SHINE. We need to smile at others, let someone into traffic, offer a kind word. We can be the good in the world and lead the change toward love and joy.

At 50, I feel more free, more grounded, and more me than ever before. And I wouldn’t trade that for anything. Thank you for being here and walking this journey with me. Here’s to embracing every season of life with intention and joy.
